TREKKERS SOUGHT AS GUIDES

LONDON (Reuter) - London's Science Museum invited ``Star Trek'' fans Friday to boldly go where they had never gone before -- into the job market.

``Calling all ``Trekkers' for the best job opportunity on Earth,'' read the museum's job advertisement.

It said it wanted fans of the television and film series, who often design or buy their own ``Star Trek'' uniforms, to dress up to act as guides at its forthcoming Star Trek exhibition.

The Captain Kirk or Lieutenant Uhuru wanna-bes will have to audition for the role. Those successful will be paid 4.80 pounds ($7.60) an hour to indulge their fantasies.

``I think we're going to be inundated. We have already had lots of inquiries,'' said a Science Museum spokeswoman.

The exhibition, set to run from Oct. 11 to February next year, will include sets and props from the television series and seven feature films, including Captain Kirk's chair.

INITIATIONS SPOILER (UPCOMING VOYAGER EPISODE)

When First Officer Chakotay borrows a Shuttlecraft to perform the Pakra, a solitary Indian ritual commemorating his father's death, he inadvertently drifts into Kazon-Ogla territory and becomes the target of a Kazon youth attempting to earn his Ogla warrior name by killing the Federation enemy.

Striking back, Chakotay disarms and destroys the Kazon ship, but not before rescuing the young boy named Kar -- the only surviving lifeform -- by transporting him aboard the Shuttlecraft. Soon, the two are pulled via tractor beam aboard a larger Kazon vessel sent to investigate the explosion. Led by Razik and Haliz, the Kazon-Ogla hold Chakotay prisoner when they learn that because Kar has failed in his first mission, he doesn't earn his name and is sentenced to die . . . by Chakotay's hands.

Meanwhile, fearing their missing comrade is in danger, the Voyager crew -- with Kes and Neelix providing their expertise on Kazon -- sets out to find Chakotay.

Guest starring Aron Eisenberg as Kar, Patrick Kilpatrick as Razik and Tim de Zarn as Haliz.

The story is written by Kenneth Biller. The episode is directed by Rick Kolbe.

PATRICK STEWART COMES OUT FOR GAY CHARACTERS

In an cover story and interview by Donna Minkowitz for the August 22, 1995 issue of The Advocate, Patrick Stewart says, "It would be very appropriate if the upcoming Next Generation movies made it their business to have gay characters."

Stewart also said he thought that gay people should be dismayed by the fact that they are not portrayed as part of the 24th Century, that he agreed with theories that Q was gay, that he found the idea that Q was simply the another aspect of Picard attractive, that he has read slash fiction and seen homoerotic illustrations of Riker, Picard and Data sharing a shower.

He also talks about his fascination for roles that explore the abuse of power and the fact that the threat of violence played a large role in his childhood.

Here's are some more tidbits:

Q: You may or may not be aware of this, but there are some people who, for
whatever reason, are absolutely convinced you're gay.

A: So I'm told! This has come to my ears only recently ... I wondered if
it could be in any way connected with ... Jeffrey ... I can only say that I
feel very good about it. From an evolutionary point of view, the
acceptance and embracing of aspects of one's personality is wonderful: To
feel areas of vulnerability that I have not in the past associated with
being a man. To also be able to admit, as I have been able to in recent
years, to deep love and affection--sometimes verging on passion--for some
of my male friends and colleagues. It is wonderful to feel at ease and
comfortable with their arms around me and mine around them. To have a kind
of delight in that. All of this is a very recent experience.

Q: You've told an interviewer you felt "much discomfort" about The Next
Generation's treatment of women.

A: I felt that the writers and producers could not escape from their own
essential rigidity in their attitudes to women. They were continually
featured as sexual objects, as softer, weaker, and therefore --it always
seemed to me-- second-class individuals. And because I believed and still
do that the show represents what our underlying philosophies are, it doubly
irritated me that in that area I thought we were failing. ... there is
kind of a boys club atmosphere about Star Trek, you understand. Our
actresses were not finding sympathetic ears.

BARRETT DOESN'T WANT TO DIE!

by Mark Barbisan On Augest 5th and 6th, I went to Toronto Trek 9, a convention in Toronto, Ontario. One of the guest was Majel Barret, I of course, went to both speeches that she put on, but on the Sunday she said something very interesting. Somebody told her that she was surfing the 'Net and was told that Majel Barret's character, Lwaxanna Troi was going to die in the next feature film. Barret quickly responded by saying that she is on the 'Net too, and found the same thing, she quickly called Rick Berman, Executive Producer of TNG, DS9, Generations, VOY and the new feature film. The first words out of Barret's mouth to Berman was "Rick ... I don't want to die!!!". Berman of course, thought she was out of her mind, and didn't know what she was talking about! After Barret told Rick of what she found on the 'Net, Rick said that it was just something somebody made up, and they have NO intention of killing Lwaxanna Troi.

BRITISH ASTROMNERS SAY TREK WORMOLES MAY BE POSSIBLE

      LONDON (Reuter) - Warp travel and wormholes, once the province of
science fiction, are both possible and could one day be used to allow
humans to travel faster than the speed of light, British astronomers said
Sunday.

    The Royal Astronomical Society said it was preparing to publish a
paper that would bring new life to visions popularized in the ``Star
Trek'' television and film series.

    The report by Ian Crawford, an astronomer at University College
London, suggests that modern physics may allow two possible ways around
Albert Einstein's theory that nothing can go faster than the speed of
light.

    ``The proofs are complex and mathematical, but more and more
astrophysicists are satisfied that in theory it is possible,'' Crawford
told the Sunday Times newspaper.

    ``Wormholes'' -- rifts in the fabric of space caused by intense
gravitational fields surrounding objects like black holes -- are one way.
Travellers could pop in at at one point and then leave at another,
thousands of light-years away.

    Another way would be by using warp drive, a propulsion system that
distorts space by compressing it in front of a spaceship. Higher
mathematics sees space-time as a line that could theoretically be
crumpled.

    ``Wormholes have been around in different parts of physics and
astronomy for at least 20 years as a concept,'' Simon Mitton, an
astronomer and spokesman for the British Astronomical Society, told
Reuters in a telephone interview.

    ``But what is new in this paper is that he thinks he's found some new
properties of these wormholes.''

    Physicists had believed that anyone trying to travel through a
wormhole would be torn apart by gravitational forces, but Crawfoard said
ways had been found to stabilize them.

    ``It's entirely theoretical,'' Mitton warned. ``All of this is to do
with the structure of space-time.''

    He added, ``It is quite important to realize that when learned
societies publish a paper of any sort, the publication of the paper does
not imply the collective endorsement of the entire society.''

THE OKUDAS COMMENTS ON FUTURE TREK CD ROMS

The following was posted my Mike Okuda on AOL's Star Trek forum:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Subj:  Re:Newer sources
Date:  95-08-09 23:51:18 EDT
From:  Okuda23392
Regarding newer sources, the Star Trek Omnipedia, set to be released in a
few days from Simon and Schuster Interactive, will help fill that need.
This CD-ROM is based on the Star Trek Encyclopedia (by myself, Denise
Okuda, and Debbie Mirek) and the Star Trek Chronology (by Denise and I).
The CD-ROM will contain updated material beyond that in the hardcopy
editions, and will feature lots of multimedia elements.  S&SI also plans
to issue update disks to keep the product current.
Simon and Schuster Interactive is indeed hard at work on a Klingon CD-ROM
project.  They probably wouldn't appreciate us saying too much at this
point, but they've done over two weeks of shooting on the Paramount lot
for this project, and they've involved several Star Trek writers.  Also
involved is Klingon language inventor Marc Okrand.  We haven't seen
anything final, but the stuff we have seen is extremely cool.  By the way,
the live-action scenes were directed by Jonathan Frakes, and much of the
behind-the-scenes crew of Star Trek Voyager and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
worked on this project.
Finally, Viacom Interactive (I'm not sure if this is the actual name of
the company) is in production on a CD-ROM game based on Star Trek Deep
Space Nine.  Again, we've not seen a final version of this, but the art
we've been shown is very cool.  They've had a photo crew perform extensive
photodocumentation of the sets to help insure the authenticity of the
product.
HARLAN ELLISON'S TREK BOOK
This a messsage posted by Joe Straczynski, Babylon 5's Executive Producer
on August 9:
       It's the story that followers of STAR TREK have been discussing,
analyzing, disseminating and hearing for nearly thirty years, involving what
polls and conventions have consistently shown to be the single best episode
of the original STAR TREK series ever produced: "The City on the Edge of
Forever."
       What *really* happened?  Who *really* did the final produced script?
How did the original script come to be, what was in it (and almost as
important, given rumors, what *wasn't* in it), and what do those most
directly involved have to say about it?
       For the first time, you'll hear directly not only from Harlan
Ellison (the article in the TV Guide special ST issue was basically just a
warm-up), but also from Leonard Nimoy, Peter David, DeForest Kelley, Walter
Koenig, D.C. Fontana, Melinda Snodgrass and George Takai...not in
interviews, but in essays they have themselves written on the subject, for
publication for the first time.
       Publication where, you ask?  In THE CITY ON THE EDGE OF FOREVER, the
definitive book on the subject just completed by Harlan and those indicated
above.  The limited edition book contains not only the first version of the
script, but subsequent revisions, two of the original treatments, actual
correspondence printed here for the first time which will dispell many of
the rumors circulating for over 30 years, afterwords by those noted in the
paragraph above, and a 20,000 word introduction by Harlan Ellison.
       Publication of this book is one of the most eagerly awaited events by
followers of STAR TREK.  Advance orders have been pouring in, and only 330
copies of the special limited edition remain, at $75 plus $5 shipping and
handling (UPS insured) from Borderlands Press, a noted and prestigious
publisher of quality limited edition books.  These will be shipping on
October 1st.  The book has already been completed, and is now at the
printers being typeset and bound.
       A regular trade hardcover edition will be available later, starting
December 1st, at a price of $25, plus $5 S&H.
       This, as they say, is the Real Deal, with information withheld from
publication for 30 years, made available here for the first time, along with
the ability to show the progression through various stages of the script
that became "The City on the Edge of Forever."  For writers interested in
studying scripts, for followers of the show who want exclusive behind the
scenes info, for anyone with an abiding interest in things Trek...this is
going to be *the* book to buy, the only Star Trek-based book ever likely to
come from Harlan Ellison, and thus a sure collector's item.
       Visa/Mastercard orders can be placed at 1-800-528-3310, or send check
or money order to BORDERLANDS PRESS, PO Box 146, Brooklandville, MD  21022
HALLMARK TREK ORNAMENTS
The Romulan Warbird and the Mini-ships ornaments are in the store! The Picard and Kirk ornaments haven't yet arrived.
SAN FRANCISCO CON REPORT AUGUST 5/6
by BGlinda@aol.com
James Doohan:    Mr. Doohan stated that he was happy to be back in San
Francisco.  This is the city he met his wife in.  He said that he didn't mind
signing autographs but only one.  If someone presented more than one
item, it
would cost $10.  He talked about the bright children asking questions.  Years
ago it was mostly adults at conventions but recently there had been a trend
that children got up to the microphone and asked really thoughtful
questions.  For example. Recently he'd been asked if you could transport
something moving and he answered "Absolutely not!"  Then another
youngster stood up and said that in Star Trek 4 they transported whales
out of the ocean.  Well, ever thinking on his toes he responded they were
caught in a frozen moment.  He then recalled it was a Klingon ship and we
don't know how they work.  Many people had pointed out that they had
looked over the Enterprise blue prints and THERE WERE NO TOILETS on the
Enterprise.
Mr. Doohan talked about how the Enterprise would look if he were the Captain.
He'd limit Ensign Kirk to one girl every five years. Chekov could never
scream again. Sulu would never be allowed to carry arms. Uhura would have
more lines than "Hailing frequencies open captain."  Bones would never be
allowed to say "He's dead Jim." And Spock would never be allowed in
Scotty's engine room.  Last time he died. But he was the best director
ever to sit in that chair.
Max Grodenchik (Rom on Deep Space Nine):  Funny man!  "This is what I look
like in person.  I'm taller!"  Then he demonstrated Nog's  walk and voice.
Quite different from the actor.  Mr. Grodenchik talked about his audition for
Deep Space Nine.  He was trying out for Quark when he ran into Armin
Shimerman.  Mr. Shimerman said that they were both up for the role of Quark
and Mr. Grodenchik thought he must have a relative, an uncle or
something, on staff at Paramount .  Then Mr. Shimerman said "because
we're the only short guys on the lot."
Avery Brooks:   Mr. Brooks arrived looking like the Hawk character, head
shaved with a goatee and mustache.  When asked who designed his new look he
responded "God."  He is a very animated speaker who seems to talk
directly to
his audience.  He is professor of theater at Rutgers University for the past
23 years, so he is well versed in his craft of live performance.  He loves
being a Captain.  He gets to say ENGAGE.
Jonathan Frakes directs a recent episode of DS9 and Michael Dorn will be a
recurring character.  So much for TNG crossover.  Mr. Brooks will direct an
episode soon.
Cirroc Lofton (Jake Sisko) and Mr. Brooks' own son are good friends and play
basketball whenever they get together.  He has a daughter and two sons and
responded when asked if they thought it was special that he was on Star Trek
that "...all they care about is that I'm dad."
His favorite prop is his clock that he's always working on.
Colm Meaney makes him laugh.  He sings to Nana Visitor's son.
When asked what it felt like to punch out Q he said that if had known the
lore he'd have punched him harder.
Mr. Brooks sings opera, was born in Evansville Ind. and raised in Gary Ind.
When asked how he feels about Sisko he responded "For brown children and all
children, to think, in the long thought, you will still be alive in 300 to
400 years."
His response to a question about what new ground he wanted to see was
[things] "are moving so quickly, not just technology but our minds.  What is
a human being.  In the classroom - tell the truth."
Who was his role model growing up.  "All I ever knew was what my parents
taught me.  My inspirations are my mother and my father."
He left the stage singing in a wonderful baritone voice "For All We Know."
Garrett Wang (Pronounced Wong.  Harry Kim of Voyager):  His parents were in
the convention hall and were introduced to the audience.  He is a grand mimic
and imitated George Takei perfectly.  He talked about he previous acting
rolls, such as on Marget Chow's show, and commercials.  (He had longer hair
then.)  He told about working in a McDonald's commercial as an employee then
realized he had just followed Mr. Brooks.  He imitated Mr. Brooks giving his
credentials: Shakespeare, Paul Roberson, etc., and "I did a commercial."  He
was hilarious. He did an Irish accent for Kate Mulgrew (Captatin Kathryn
Janeway, Voyager) and she roared with laughter.
Robert Duncan McNeil (Tom Paris of Voyager):  Mr. McNeil had his young
daughter, Taylor, with him on stage.  Sweet little girl.  He said that he and
his family had walked around San Francisco with a guide book looking for Star
Fleet Academy and couldn't find it.  Did anyone know where it was located?
It was meant to be a joke and he was surprised when his San Francisco
audience screamed back to the stage that Star Fleet Academy was at the
Presidio. (Spanish  for fort.  Recently converted Army base, now a
national park.)   He has a new nickname on the set given by Ms. Mulgrew.
Spike!  He keeps getting his hair cut shorter and shorter.
Marina Sirtis:  Ms. Sirtis posed for cameras and asked that after that
time no flash pictures be taken because it blinded her.  People continued
to ignore her request to return to their seats and refrain from using the
flash.  They took pictures throughout her appearance, but she stayed on
stage and
addressed the compliant audience members.  She was delightfully funny and
as lovely as always.
Why did they have Troy at the poker games?  She's an empath!  Ms. Sirtis said
she would like to see a scene where she had a stack of money stating that she
sensed  Riker was bluffing.  "I win!"  as she scrapes the money to her side
of the table.
She wanted to set the record straight about the rumors that she didn't like
the script for Generations.  When she first read the script and got to the
part where she gets to drive the ship.  She called her best friend on the
show (Michael Dorn) and said "I get to drive the Enterprise."  Mr. Dorn asked
if she had read the script and when she said no he suggested she call him
back when she finished.  She was dismayed when she discovered she wrecked the
Enterprise.  Ms. Sirtis wondered why they would give someone the keys and not
tell them where the brake was.  Further she pointed out that in the first
season they gave the keys to a blind guy, then to a kid who wasn't old enough
to get a drink in 10 Forward.  Afterwards, the person who got to drive was
any woman in a red shirt, but they had to be nice to Data.
Ms. Sirtis ended by thanking her fans.  She said that everything she was and
everything she had was because of them.  She said that if there were no Star
Trek fans keeping the shows alive she would never have come to this country
from England and would not have met her husband..
Leonard Nimoy:  Mr. Nimoy showed bloopers and scenes from Star Trek 4, the
movie he directed.  There was an announcement that Mr. Nimoy would not be
signing autographs.  Many people walked on stage to get his autograph
anyway.  He was extremely gracious and signed all requests.
He was very complimentary of William Shatner's acting ability by showing Mr.
Shatner acting to a blank wall.  He spoke about his son Adam directing
him in an episode of the new Outer Limits.  Mr. Nimoy had also stared in the
original show.  He spoke about the tremendous reward he felt as an actor and
a father to have the opportunity to work with his son.
Mr. Nimoy has written a follow-up to his autobiography "I Am Not Spock" which
many thought was a criticism of his role on Star Trek.  His new autobiography
"I Am Spock" celebrates his long run as the universe's most beloved Vulcan.
This convention attendee has never had such an experience before.  I have
seen him - the great one himself .  Live long and prosper Mr. Nimoy.
TORONTO CON REPORT
By Natasha Tavares
Tim Russ said that Voyager started filming on July 1st, confirmed that
Frakes  has directed an episode and talked a little bit about upcoming
shows. He  said that we learn more about the crews' families. He
mentioned that there  are a couple of episodes where we get a back story
for Kim and Paris. He  also said that we'd get to see Tuvok's wife in an
episode where Voyager comes  across an alien lifeform that's trying to
take over the ship, and makes  Tuvok see her. He mentioned that Tuvok has
4 children.
When asked if Voyager's disappearance was ever going to be addressed on
DS9, he said that it was a question that TPTB had already been asked, and that
yes, it would make sense to have them do that. He made it sound like they
were working on that.
Majel Barret denied the rumor that the next movie will see her dead. She
said that she saw the rumored script on the 'net, 'phoned up Berman and
read it to him, and he assured her that none of it was true. She doesn't
even know if she'll be *in* the movie. But she did say that the movie
should be out for November '96.
When asked if Lwaxana would re-appear on DS9, she said that she'd like
it, and she even had an idea for a story that she pitched to TPTB (The
Powers That Be). She  described it in 2 words. "Lwaxana's pregnant." [!]
She said that the  teaser would involve her beaming onto the station,
looking very obviously  pregnant, and her first words would be : "Would
someone please tell Odo I'm here."
She also had an idea about how she could be on Voyager. As a visual
representation of the computer. She described it as a hairless white head
that appeared whenever anyone talked to the computer. She was willing to
go uncredited, she just wants to appear on the show. However, TPTB
responded to this suggestion with "It sounds expensive."
When asked about the problems with the Generations script [*not* the
leaks, the writing], she would only say that she agreed with the
questioner, that mistakes had been made and hopefully had been sorted out
by the next movie.
One more thing that's more a rumor than anything, apparently TPTB want
to downsize the cast of Voyager, and the three names on top of the list
to be cut, based on fan reactions, are Kim, Neelix and Kes.
HOUSTON CON REPORT
July 29, 1995
Houston, Texas at the Harvey Hotel
Guest: Robert Duncan McNeil (Tom Paris, Voyager)
First, I'll give you all the non-spoilers, followed by a spoiler section.
NON-SPOILERS:
1. Garrett Wang reads the Internet "EVERY DAY".  He frequently prints out
   interesting articles and shows them to the rest of the crew.  Hi Garrett!
   "You won't BELIEVE what they're saying now!!!"
2. Robert Picardo (The Doctor) read the net occasionally, but not every day.
3. McNeill has a Mac, and during the fall before Voyager aired, he used his
   Mac on the e-World (or was it e-Net) network to learn what fans thought
   about the idea of a new Trek show.  He hasn't used it since the fall, but
   he gets updates from Wang on what the fans are thinking.
4. There will be THIRTY (30) episodes of Voyager in season 2.  It was not
   clear if the not-yet-scene four episodes are considered season 1 or 2.
5. There is no truth to the rumor that McNeil and Mulgrew are having an
   affair.  (I must have missed this rumor.)  HOWEVER, McNeil and Mulgrew's
   trailers are facing each other.  All the other crew members have trailers
   on the other side of the lot.
6. McNeil said the Voyager bible said the ship would "recycle" its energy
   while flying through space.  (Hydrogen collectors?)  He has no idea why
   they threw that out.
7. Ethan Phillip's real name is "John".  The "Ethan" name had to be inserted
   because of some union thing(?).
8. [Ethan] John Phillips wears his pants very low when filming, and often
   "bends over" when guests are on the set to show them, well, uh... his
   back side.  :-)
9. McNeil has only been in one movie.  He-Man: Masters of the Universe.
   He and Courtney Cox played the "human teenagers" on the planet Earth.
10. McNeil and one of the other Voyager actors will be directing episodes
    in the future.
11. They usually work 14 hour days.  There must be at least 12 hours of rest
    time between work days.  (i.e., Monday's 6am-8pm, Tuesday 8am-10pm,
    Wednesday 10am-midnight, etc.)
12. There isn't much time to prepare for your role.  Sometimes they don't
    get the script until 9:30pm Sunday when they start filming Monday at 6am.
13. A kid asked "How much do you get paid?"  "Standard Starfleet salary!"
14. McNeill has been friends with Wil Wheaton since the "First Duty" TNG
    episode.
15. The writers spent a bunch of time on the Doctor, Neelix and Kes,
    because they were afraid they would get neglected.  Apparently, they
    took this to the extreme.
16. McNeil's favorite episode is "Ex Post Facto" because he likes kissing
    the "Bird Lady".  "Faces" is his second favorite, because it was one of
    the few times he got to work with Roxann Biggs-Dawson.
17. One time, McNeill had one of the prop guys take those gigantic
    communicator's from the 14" dolls available at toy stores, and attached
    Velcro to it.  During a scene filming with Kate, he took off his small
    communicator, put the big one on, and when Kate turned around to deliver
    her line, she started laughing.
18. McNeil spent about two years doing auditions for the show "Going to
    Extremes" (from the creators of Northern Exposure).  He wanted to
    audition for Deep Space Nine, but the "Going to Extremes" auditions
    required all his time.  He did get the job on Extremes, but it flopped
    in the ratings.
19. After "Extremes" flopped, his agent called him and said that they
    were doing auditions for the "Star Trek: Generations" film.  He went
    to audition, and got the part for the "series".  Both McNeill and his
    agent were confused, because they thought it was for Generations (they
    thought the movie had something to do with the "First Duty" episode.)
    The confusion resulted because his agent, when told it was for a
    "spinoff", never assumed two new series (DS9 and Voyager) would occur so
    soon after another, and thought Paramount was incorrect, and that it
    was for the movie.  :-)
20. He was in the play (NOT the movie) "Six Degrees of Separations".
21. He is 30 years old.  He gave his exact birthday, but I forget.  Someone
    mentioned "Ah, you're a Scorpion", and he confirmed that.
22. He played a character on some soap opera, but I can't remember the name.
23. The characters that have to have extensive make-up sometimes have to
    get to work as early as 2:30 in the morning.
24. Roxann Biggs-Dawson (B'Elanna) is affected by the makeup, and frequently
    breaks out from it.  Not pleasant.
MINOR SPOILERS FOLLOW:
1. The Tom Paris-field medic story line is DEAD.  McNeill didn't want to be
   a doctor, and the script writers think Kes fits the role much better.
2. Most likely, will never see the Delaney sisters, only talk about them.
3. In an upcoming episode, McNeill pours his heart out to some girl.  He
   really hated that scene.
4. McNeil says Jeri Taylor says Paris and Chakotay's relationship will be
   expanded in season 2.
5. In an upcoming episode, there are a bunch of explosions, filling the
   room with smoke.  The next day, they filmed more from the same scene,
   but everyone on the set forget the room was supposed to be filled with
   smoke.  They didn't have a day to spare and re-shoot the scene, so look
   for this scene where suddenly all the smoke from the explosions disappear.
6. The pool-hall holodeck scenes will no longer be filled with smoke, as the
   entire set and surroundings must be filled with smoke, and all the cast
   and crew have a hard time working in it.  So, holodeck is now a
   smoke-free environment.
7. Kes is two years old.
MAJOR SPOILERS FOLLOW --- WARNING --- MAJOR SPOILERS FOLLOW
1. Only three people from TNG can make it to Voyager...
   (a) Q
   (b) Wesley
   (c) Barclay
   Barclay WILL be in an upcoming episode.  The plot wasn't discussed.  :-)
   Nothing yet known about Q or Wesley.  Barclay is a "computer expert".
2. Tom Paris and Harry will be in an upcoming episode in which they exist
   in an "alternate reality", back on Earth.  Involves many explosions with
   Harry and Tom in a shuttle.
MINNEAPOLIS GARAK CON REPORT
The Minneapolis convention was scheduled to run from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00
p.m.  Andrew Robinson was scheduled at 5:50!   Say what???
A Deep Space Nine music video ran before his appearance to get us in the
mood.  Garak did not appear in the video.
These two facts might have daunted a lesser performer, but AR is made of
more resilient stuff.  "Where was Garak in that montage?" he asked in
outraged tones as he bounded onto the stage.  "What am I, chopped liver?
I'll have you know that on Cardassia I'm considered hunky."
He was asked, of course, about Worf's addition to the cast.  He had
actually been more concerned about the Defiant being added in the
previous season.  He didn't want DS9 to change into TOS format of "One
Night Stands" where a group of Star Fleet types boldly went off to kick
some new butt each week.  Where would that leave Garak, Quark, etc.
Fortunately, the Defiant didn't hurt the show.  The third season was the
best yet.  He thought Worf could shake things up in a positive way.
He spoke of trying out for the role of Odo and leaving the room with his
head hanging, knowing he'd blown it.  When he auditioned for Garak,
"Everything I threw out stuck to the ceiling.  I figured if they gave the
role to anybody else, he must be a genius, because this role is MINE!!!
He was asked how Garak would fare in a competition with Q.  He admitted
that Q was tougher, but insisted that Garak would get the last word.
He was asked why Garak was evicted from Cardassia.  He said, "That's the
sort of secret which can only be revealed in the last episode.  Garak
ALWAYS gets the last word.
ARMIN SHIMMERMAN ON PRODIGY TRANSCRIPT
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
    Hi everybody. Glad to be here. Glad you're out there!!!!
    Beam yourselves up.
Mr. Quark (Member Question)
    Armin, what does it feel like wearing thathuge ferengi mask?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
    Its a little like having a head cold. Very
    claustrophobic. especially on warm days.
    Whew!!!!!
AJoeyK (Member Question)
    Out of all the characters you've played,
    which is most like you?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
    The two closest is probably Bernie on
    Brooklyn Bridge and Pascal on Beauty and the
    Beast. Pascal Is the closer.
Helios (Member Question)
    What other "non-trek" roles have you played?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
    Whew. I have been a working actor for twenty
    years. There are too many to enumerate.
AJoeyK (Member Question)
    Do you think you bear more than just apassing resemblance
    to Ethan Phillips?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
    Let's see we are both balding. Both short.
    Both work on Star Trek. Both incredibly
    handsome. Wait a minute, I think I am Ethan
    Phillips
Helios (Member Question)
    How long does it take to get all that makeup on?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
    Ah, the old make-up question. Let's see....21/2 hours.
AJoeyK (Member Question)
   Do you think Neelix from Star Trek: Voyager
   is a copy of Quark?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   Good question. I truly believe the character
   of Neeelix was in some way based on Quark.
   However, there are enough differences
   between the two to keep Ethan and I happy.
   Although we find ourselves, sharing the same
   costumes.
EWORTH (Member Question)
   Rom has been getting stronger in each
   episode that he has been in.  Do you think
   Quark is getting weaker?  Does that bother
   you?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   Rom is getting stronger which conversely
   will only make Quark stronger. You are only
   as good as the conflicts you overcome. I am
   totally jazzed by Rom's new found strength.
DS9 Fan 95 (Member Question)
   Were you a big Star Trek fan when you were
   growing up?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   Yes. From day one.
Helios (Member Question)
   What is your working relationship with other
   actors on the show?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   I have a wonderful relationship with all of
   them. But because of our mutual backgrounds
   and the massive extent of time that we spend
   together, none of the relationships are as
   strong and loving as the one I have with
   Rene.
JAYRI (Member Question)
   Who  is the new  character going to be in
   the next season  of DS9
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   Where have you been???  WORF - a
   non-Ferengi.
Rodor (Member Question)
   I just want to say you portray Quark
   superbly and I think they should expand your
   role.  Any chance of some major Quark storylines
   next season?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   Rick Berman, our executive producer, has
   been quoted as saying that Quark driven
   stories are a major asset to the show. You
   can bet on more Quark stories for season 4.
Moderator (Speaker)
   Great news!!!
Cougre (Member Question)
   Quark, will we ever get a comprehensive list
   of the 'Rules of Acquisition'?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   As soon as Ira Behr pens them all. Say year
   2010.
Feanor1 (Member Question)
   Armin!!!!!!  Off-camera, what sort of pranks
   do you play with the other cast memb?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   This question is often asked as Conventions.
   Its a common fallacy to believe because TNG
   members played practical jokes on their set,
   that we do the same on ours. We are a much
   more serious, less fun loving, less prankish
   sort of set. I have never heard of a prank
   ever being pulled on anyone on our set.
Ubliet (Member Question)
   How is it possible to memorize all of the
   Ferengi law in your role as Quark?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   There is a old, ancient tome gifted to me by
   Roddenberry in it are all the rules and I
   meet with a Ferengi magi who quizzes me once
   every 43 days.
Zak21 (Member Question)
   What's your favorite episode?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   House of Quark. If you haven't seen it, find
   it. I was amazing!!!
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   How Come you never heard of me? Because
   Michele over at the publicists, Bender
   Goldman and Helper, is doing her job well
   enough. I don't know. I guess you don't go
   to the bars I do.
Zak21 (Member Question)
   Do you get any ferengi girls?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   What do you mean "get" ??
BretMaverick (Member Question)
   Hi I am Big Fan of DS9, I am just wondering
   Armin is there any plans for a somewhat of a
   love affair between Cisco and Dax....
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   What do I care about Sisko! I SAW HER
   FIRST!!!
Cavekitty1 (Member Question)
   Mr. Shimerman love your character... How are
   you doing tonight?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   I'm a little frazzled. I go back to work
   tomorrow morning for the first time in 3
   months. All that rubber. HORRORS!!!!
FLAG ADMIRAL (Member Question)
   What episode of the NEXT GENERATION were you
   a Feringi in?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   I played all the Ferengi on TNG. Don't let
   any of those other actors tell you
   otherwise.
Terrorspud (Member Question)
   Is there any way you will be leaving the
   show?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   Yeah if they don't give me a raise!
Feanor1 (Member Question)
   Armin, who's YOUR favourite Ferengi?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   My favorite Ferengi is ROM.
halucin8 (Member Question)
   hi hi hi there Armin.........do you have any
   real experience as a bartender ?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   No, but I was a terrific waiter at the
   restaurant, Victoria Station. My wife,
   however, was a bartender when I met her.
Halfmast (Member Question)
   Armin....It is my pleasure to meet you.  I
   was told that you were once in the Navy.  Is
   that true?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   You've been at sea too long. Hell no!
Dialogist (Member Question)
   Armin, conventional wisdom says that you can
   always benefit in some way, even from the
   most...unfortunate circumstances.  What good
   things (for you) came out of being in
   "Stooge Mania"?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   I have tried for years to forget Stooge
   Mania. You have done your homework.
Mr. Beta (Member Question)
   How do you feel about the decision of
   brining the character of WORF to DS9?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   Michael Dorn is a wonderful man and a
   friend. He will bring a wonderful conflict
   with him which can only make the show richer
   and more dramatic. It'll will be good to
   spend the early morning hours in the make-up
   trailer with him.
MOOK (Member Question)
   My friends tell me I act like a Ferengi,
   Should I be proud or insulted?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   You should change your friends.
AbieBaby (Member Question)
   Has my favorite character Morn ever said a
   word or made even a sound?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   Never said a word. I Don't know if he has
   muttered or not, but I think not.
GOLIATH98 (Member Question)
   What is the hardest part of playing a
   Ferengi ?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   The look of disdain in the eyes of the other
   actors.
AbieBaby (Member Question)
   I think Andrea Martin could become the
   Lwxanna Troi of DS9.  Might she return next
   year?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   If she can stand the gruesome make-up
   process, again. You'll have to ask her.
SpockBoy (Member Question)
   Do you like to use the 'net? do you have a
   homepage? If so, what's the URL?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   I use a computer at home every day. the
   URL??? you are ill???
GOLIATH98 (Member Question)
   Because you look so different when your out
   of your makeup do you ever get recognized ?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   Mostly not. A situation which I quite relish.
   I wouldn't change my anonymity with
   anyone.
A GentleMan2 (Member Question)
   Can you tell me how long it takes to tape
   the average episode of DS9, and how far in
   advance of its air date is it normally
   completed?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   We take 7 to 8 days to shoot an episode. It
   takes about 8 weeks to air. Post production
   takes a while to do.
BretMaverick (Member Question)
   is there gonna a love interest for you?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   I should think so. Quark is after all the
   STUD of Ds-9. I've had more love interests
   than even Bashir.
Dicer Dave (Member Question)
   What will you do when DS9 goes off the air?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   CRY!!!
Sweet Satin (Member Question)
   will they ever make a movie with DS9
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   That truly depends on the financial success
   of the next couple of TNG movies. Personally
   speaking, I don't think lightning can strike
   three times in the same quadrant.
GAlaxar (Member Question)
   How many seasons would you predict DS-9 will
   remain on air?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   6 all together
Doc Zim (Member Question)
   Who is the comedian on the set?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   Cirroc
Dialogist (Member Question)
   Could you please define (in 500 words or
   less) the "unique Shakespearean acting
   approach" that you teach?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   Real quickly. I teach Elizabethan Rhetoric
   which is the Rosetta stone to making
   Shakespeare's language understandable and
   approachable.
ARDac (Member Question)
   I really enjoyed "Family Business".   Did
   you enjoy doing it?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   Yes. I loved working with Max and Andrea.
   And the real icing on the cake was having
   Rene direct. It came out well, didn't it.
aaronmk (Member Question)
   DO YOU THINK YOUR PLAYING OF THE FIRST
   FERINGI SET STRIDE FOR THE REPUTATION OF THE
   FERINGI FROM THEN ON?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   Good question. I live with the guilt of
   knowing my lack of success at playing the
   first Ferrengi, who was suppose to be a
   short savage being, and instead turned out
   to be a comic gerbil is a great
   disappointment to me. Further, all the
   actrs who followed were forced to follow in
   my misdeeds. That's the stride I
   unfortunately set.
Philster (Member Question)
   Do you have any plans to appear in a
   Broadway play?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   I have done 4 Broadway shows. I hope one day
   to get back to where I truly belong (sans a
   lot of makeup).
I M DUCKMAN (Member Question)
   Do you like everybody on your show?
Ben Sisko2 (Member Question)
   I loved you as quark and I wanted to know if
   you are going to be a starfleet officer
   maybe
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   Over my dead body !!!!
Comdr Troi (Member Question)
   Will your wife be making any return
   appearances next season?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   Yes, my wife did appear in an episode,
   Sanctuary. We all hope for her character,
   Bajoran minister Rozhan, to reappear. Would
   you all write in and ask for her. Write to
   Star Trek, 5555 Melrose Ave., LA, Ca. 90036.
APTOM (Member Question)
   what's the 33rd rule of acquisition?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   It never hurts to suck up to the boss.
Locutus 2 (Member Question)
   What do you do in your spare time?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   I do this.
Moderator (Speaker)
   And we're glad he's here!!!!!
CHIEF TIM (Member Question)
   Why is it normal for Ferengi women to benaked?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   Because it is.    Why is it normal for HUMAN
   women to wear clothes?
JMCRC (Member Question)
   Quark, how many bars of Gold-Pressed Latinum
   do I need to rent one of your Holosuites?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   How many do you have ?
VOYAGER3 (Member Question)
   Have you attended many Trek conventions?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   Many. As a matter of fact, I'll be in
   Whichita Falls and Odessa Texas this weekend
   and Seattle next weekend and boy are my ears
   tired.
Ggifford (Member Question)
   what are the masks made out of? is it Latex?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   yes.
bigdog tired (Member Question)
   How do you eat with those teeth in?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   Absolutely not. The only relief I have of
   being in the makeup for so long (16 hours)
   is the satisfaction of taking the teeth out.
   But I have eaten a lot of scenery with those
   teeth.
NyteFiori (Member Question)
   Where you ever on an episode of "Married
   with Children"?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   Yes. I was trying to get my dog, humped.
MLE fan (Member Question)
   I'll admit it took me a while to warm up to
   DS9 after watching TNG for so long, but
   Quark was my favorite from day one. A
   schemer with a heart...what woman could
   resist?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   Thank you. You are very kind.
   My numberis 213)555 ....
CHIEF TIM (Member Question)
   So tell us, how fast does the Defiant REALLY
   go?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   I don't know. It just sits there on Stage 18.
spockfan (Member Question)
   I am enjoying all the ST series.  I find the
   political intrigue of DS9 "fascinating".
   Will we be seeing more of the Dominion next
   season?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   Yes.
PalVal (Member Question)
   Will Quark ever marry?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   Why put all your latinum in one bucket?
goddess2 (Member Question)
   Jonathan Frakes has been a guest star and a
   director last season. Rumor has it Tom Riker
   will be back again this year. Is there any
   truth to that rumor? Will Frakes direct any
   episodes again this season?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   The rumor of Frakes directing is probably
   true. Will Riker come back, check the
   ratings!
AtkButterfly (Member Question)
   how tall are you and is that female ferengi
   coming back soon?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   I am 5'1" and 1/8. AS soon as we can find
   out if she wants to.
Brandei Man (Member Question)
   If you had the chance to go to space will
   you go ?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   No. I'm afraid of heights.
gundlion (Member Question)
   During his time on TNG, Brent Spiner never
   did appear on a TV talk show.  Are you also
   contractually obligated to never make public
   appearances without your make-up?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   You have not done your homework. I appeared
   in make-up on the Regis and Kathy show about
   two years ago. Brent probably never did one
   because he didn't want to.
Mouka (Member Question)
   I loved you on Beauty and the Beast.  Any
   feelings on that show and its cancellation?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   I too loved Beauty and the Beast and
   thank-you for remembering. I always hope for
   a movie or a Movie of the week. It was a
   Is there anything else Quark cares for other
   than money and profit?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   Believe it or not, respect.
Safdah (Member Question)
   How do you feel about the addition of the
   Defiant to the show?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   I think it is wonderful for the show to have
   the option to use the ship and its firepower
   when needed. However, there isn't going to
   be a lot of use for Quark on the Defiant. So
   you can understand if I prefer stories that
   aren't centered there.
DEVEREAUX (Member Question)
   How surprised would you be if the first
   aliens to set foot on earth looked very much
   like your character on DS 9?
   I wouldn't be too surprised. It's you HUMANS
   that look weird.
LdyLydia (Member Question)
bigdog tired (Member Question)
   If you were writing the scripts, is there
   anything you would change about Quark? Other
   than more lines...
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   I would make him more valuable to the show
   by using his business connections to make
   inquires where Star Fleet personal can't go.
   Emulate the actions of my namesake, Armand
   Hammer.
UstwoGuys (Member Question)
   If you did it with Odo, does that mean you
   and he are both bi? or  would he just turn
   into a woman and you'd still be straight??
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   Odo can morph into anything and best of all,
   after a couple of hours he HAS to go back to
   his pail.
JWWWWWWWWWWW (Member Question)
   Why won't you answer
   me???????????????????????????
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   What would you like to know ???
Highlander9 (Member Question)
   Why would you wish Voyager hardships?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
   Because the best thing in life is the
   satisfaction you get in overcoming
   hardships. But first you have to encounter
   them. So the tougher the hardships, the
   happier you are at overcoming them. Natch.
  Is there anything Quark has done that you're
  particularly proud or ashamed of?
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
  This is the last question I have an early
  call tomorrow. I'm very proud of Quark going
  back to the Klingon Hall to defend my
  Klingon wife. It took great lobes. I was
  very proud of my alter ego.
Armin Shimerman (Speaker)
  I'd got to sign off now because I have an
  early call Tomorrow . I had a great time.
  Thank-you all for talking with me and for
  the wonderful questions. I'm sorry I was
  only ABLE to answer a few. Maybe there will
